Where Afghan emperor Sher Shah Suri built his dynasty, nature carved its waterfalls, and goddess Tarachandi chose her seat of power — the Sasaram–Rohtas–Kaimur belt of Bihar is where history, mythology, and landscape converge. Three days through a UNESCO heritage tomb, a Satipeeth, one of India's oldest temples, a hilltop Mughal fortress, and the forested canyons of the Kaimur range.
Itinerary
- Day 1: Overnight from Howrah — arrive Sasaram — Board the overnight train from Howrah at 9:55 p.m. Arrive Sasaram at 6:30 a.m. Check in and freshen up at the hotel. After breakfast: Sher Shah Suri Tomb (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Hasan Khan Suri Tomb, Maa Tarachandi temple (Satipeeth on the banks of the Son river), Manjhar Kund waterfall, and Dhua Kund waterfall. Return to hotel. Overnight at Sasaram.
- Day 2: Rohtasgarh Fort & the Son river — After breakfast, drive to Rohtasgarh — the mighty fort perched on a 1,000 ft plateau above the Son river valley, one of the largest forts in India. Continue to Tutla Bhawani waterfall and temple in the forest, Pailot Baba ashram, and Indrapuri dam on the Son river. Return to hotel. Overnight at Sasaram.
- Day 3: Kaimur & return from Bhabua Road — After breakfast, check out and drive towards Kaimur: Telhar Kund waterfall, Maa Mundeswari temple (one of India's oldest functioning temples, circa 635 CE), and a drive through the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary. Reach Bhabua Road station for the night train — Chambal Express or Netaji Express — arriving Howrah early morning.
Best time to visit: October to March for comfortable weather and clear waterfall flows. Avoid monsoon for Rohtasgarh fort access.
