Booking train tickets in India is straightforward once you understand the system. Indian Railways connects over 7,000 stations and runs 13,000 trains daily. This guide takes you from having no account to having confirmed seats on any train in India, step by step.
All official train bookings in India go through IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation). Create a free account at irctc.co.in or download the IRCTC Rail Connect app on Android or iOS.
Once logged in, use the "Train between stations" search. Enter the departure station code and destination station code. Station codes are standardised: Howrah is HWH, Sealdah is SDAH, New Jalpaiguri is NJP, Gaya is GAYA, Jasidih is JSME, Varanasi is BSB. The search results show all trains on that route with departure times, arrival times, duration and available classes.
IRCTC accepts UPI (the most convenient option), credit and debit cards, net banking and wallets. After payment, you receive an e-ticket by email and SMS within seconds. This is your official ticket. Show it on your phone along with a matching government ID when asked on the train. No printing required.
The booking window opens exactly 60 days before the date of journey, at 8am Indian Standard Time. For popular trains and peak travel periods (October, November, long weekends and school holidays), book as close to the 8am opening as possible. Seats on popular routes sell out within minutes of the window opening.
If you miss the advance window, two options remain:
For groups of 10 or more, Indian Railways has a separate group booking quota handled at the station, not online. Visit the Reservation Office at Howrah or Sealdah at least 90 days before the journey date. Bring ID proofs for all passengers and a filled group booking form. Groups of 6 to 9 can book through the standard IRCTC platform, up to 6 passengers per ticket.
