Chasing Golden Hour: A Traveller’s Photo Guide

You don’t need a big camera. You need the right hour. How we plan sunrise points and simple phone settings that transform travel photos.
The single biggest difference between a travel photo that stops someone scrolling and one that gets ignored is not the camera. It is the light. Golden hour: the first 45 minutes after sunrise and the last 45 minutes before sunset. This guide is for travellers who want better photos without buying new equipment.
Golden hour is the period just after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun is low on the horizon. Light travels through more atmosphere, which filters out blue wavelengths and produces the warm orange, gold and pink tones that make landscapes glow. Shadows are long and soft. Colours are saturated without being harsh. Everything looks better.
Blue hour is the 20 minutes before sunrise and after sunset. The sky turns a deep blue-purple and artificial lights begin to glow. It is underused by most travellers and produces some of the most distinctive travel images when you plan for it.
