North Bengal has no single best time. It has different best times for different things: October for mountain clarity, February for rhododendrons, June for waterfalls, December for solitude. This guide breaks it down month by month so you can plan for exactly the experience you want.
Monsoon in North Bengal (June to mid-September) is spectacular if you know what you are getting into. The waterfalls are at their most powerful. The forests go an impossible green. The hill mist creates a completely different atmosphere than the clear winter months.
But the risks are real: landslides close roads regularly (sometimes for days), leeches are active on all forest trails, and some homestays in remote locations become temporarily inaccessible. Never book non-refundable accommodation far in advance during monsoon. Have a flexible itinerary and a local contact who can give you current road status.
The most convenient trains to North Bengal leave Howrah or Sealdah in the evening and arrive at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station the next morning. The Darjeeling Mail (leaving Sealdah at 10pm) and the Padatik Express are popular options. Travel time is 8 to 9 hours. Book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for October-November departures.
